BUTLER RECORDS DOUBLE-DOUBLE IN LADY PIRATES’ 71-59 VICTORY OVER S.C. STATE

ORANGEBURG, S.C. – Rachel Butler scored 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as the Hampton University Lady Pirates defeated South Carolina State University in a nationally-televised game on ESPNU on Saturday, 71-59.
With the win, the Lady Pirates increased their record to 9-6 overall and 4-0 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. S.C. State dropped to 4-10 overall and 1-2 in the conference
“I thought that Laura Lewis played a great first half to show us the way as a team,” stated head coach Walter Mebane. “I thought that as a team we played well together and we are still young and growing, but Butler had another great game as she recorded another double-double. We just came together as a team. Whenever you can go on the road and come out of the game with a win, you have done a great job.”
In the first half, the Lady Pirates were led by Butler, who scored seven points with six of them coming from beyond the three-point arc. Butler’s performance, along with that of the other Lady Pirates, was enough to carry them to a 32-14 first half lead. Hampton shot 39 percent (13-33) from the floor and an impressive 50 percent (5-of-10) from beyond the three-point arc. The Lady Pirates also showed their dominance on the boards in the first half as they graded 24 rebounds, compared to SC State’s 15.
In the second half, the Lady Pirates built up a commanding 20-point lead at 14:40, but the home-standing Lady Bulldogs chipped away at the lead, narrowing it to just five points at 54-59 with 5:14 minutes to play. Ultimately, Hampton would go on to claim their 12-point victory.
“We are very fortunate to lead the MEAC in rebounding and we showed that today as the ladies out-rebounded S.C. State 44-to-30,” said Mebane. “But I am just pleased with our overall performance.”
While Butler led both teams in scoring, Artiva Burns added 11 points for Hampton. Quanneisha Perry and Chinyere Ukoh both snatched 10 rebounds for the Lady Pirates.
